Sherlock: A Scandal In Belgravia - Spoiler-Free Preview!

Sherlock is back! The return of the boys from Baker Street is on New Year's Day on BBC1, and we’ve had an advance look at the first episode. The first run was widely acclaimed, even if that middle one was a bit ropey, so anticipation is high. Can they possibly live up to it?

Well, here’s a quick preview, without spoilers of course. Where’s the fun in telling you the end of the mystery?


The good news: this is everything you loved from last year and more. More Mycroft, more bromance banter, many more blatant nudges to the audience. The visual representations of Sherlock’s thought process are back and more elaborate than ever. In fact, the whole thing is overflowing with confidence; producers Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss have let success go to their heads, but in a good way.

The other big feature is the debut of Irene Adler, played by Lara Pulver of Spooks fame. She’s a very different character to the one in that movie, although there is an air of River Song about her, for those who like spotting connections between Moffat’s works. Still, Sherlock’s sexlessness is played in an interesting way, and I enjoyed the Christmas scene a lot.

Oh yes, for those who can’t get enough festive material, there’s a Christmas scene. In fact, the time-spanning scope of this episode is interesting. After months of anticipation, the resolution to last year’s cliffhanger isn’t as amazing as I’d imagined it, but to be honest, the rest of the episode is so good that I don’t really care.

So, Sherlock: A Scandal In Belgravia - an excellent return of an excellent show. Let’s see if they can get three great episodes this time. See clips and generally prepare yourself on the official BBC site,
