Harry Hill, Movie Star?

With the end of Harry Hill’s TV Burp looming, the big-collared comedian is reportedly ready to move from ITV to rival broadcaster Channel 4. In a deal worth £2million, Hill will be offered a chance to write a sketch show and a feature-length film.

Channel 4 hopes that Hill will sign up in April after the finish of TV Burp when his contract for ITV expires. It was revealed previously that Harry Hill is to quit TV Burp after finding the research for the show ‘too demanding’ and it will be replaced by a hidden camera show fronted by Dom Joly.

If Harry Hill signs for Channel 4, it is thought that he will produce a sketch show on the channel and a feature length film for Film4 which will have a cinematic release. This mirrors Britain’s best loved double act, Morecambe and Wise, when they made the move between the BBC and ITV in 1978. Thames Television offered Eric and Ernie to chance to make films; as well as gaining more money in the process. However, the duo’s films were not received well by critics and the ITV shows are considered weaker than the BBC ones.

A source told the Daily Mirror:
“(Channel 4) have offered him big budgets and a lot of creative freedom to make what he wants, and that’s what attracts him to the offer more than the pay cheque.”

The newspaper also reported that any series might coincide with the channel’s 30th anniversary in November of this year. For now, Harry Hill’s TV Burp returns on our screens tonight for its final series. It is shown on ITV1 at 7:15pm.
