Doctor Who

Science fiction series Doctor Who was first broadcast in the UK in 1963. In the intervening half a century it has become a British icon - with unforgettable imagery and scary monsters in the form of the Daleks, Cybermen, Sontarans and more.

On extended hiatus since 1989, with a one-off TV movie starring Paul McGann in the nineties, the series returned as a staple of saturday night TV in 2005 when Russell T Davies brought Doctor Who bang up to date with a new Doctor played by Christopher Eccleston. The current showrunner is Steven Moffat and the leads are Matt Smith and Jenna-Louise Coleman.

The Doctor's so far have been portrayed by William Hartnell / Richard Hurndall (First Doctor), Patrick Troughton (Second Doctor), Jon Pertwee (Third Doctor), Tom Baker (Fourth Doctor), Peter Davison (Fifth Doctor), Colin Baker (Sixth Doctor), Sylvester McCoy (Seventh Doctor), Paul McGann (Eighth Doctor), Christopher Eccleston (Ninth Doctor), David Tennant (Tenth Doctor) and Matt Smith (Eleventh Doctor). Peter Capaldi has been revealed as the Twelfth Doctor who and will make his first appearance in the role in the Christmas 2013 episode. The Doctor has also been played on screen by Peter Cushing in two theatrical films based on the TV series first Dalek stories;
